Rjukan-Notodden industrial heritage was inscribed on the UNESCO world heritage list July 5th 2015. Entrepreneur and industrial mogul Sam Eyde envisioned a future where he could “Make the waterfalls work for mankinds progress”, and that was the start of what later became Norsk Hydro and a industrial adventure Norway never had seen the likes of. Notodden became ground zero for the first successful industrial production of fertilizer. In the beginning the enormous amounts of electric power needed to make fertilizer with the electric arc-furnace developed by Sam Eyde and Dr. Kristian Birkeland was supplied by the hydroelectric power plant Tinfos I, to move on they had to tame even bigger waterfalls.
