About

Welcome to Skåtøy, the largest island in the Kragerø archipelagos with a population of approximately 250 residents. Here, on this beautiful island you will find a beautiful landscape with varied terrain. Ranging from charming trails bending through the lush forest, idyllic and sheltered little coastal coves to mountaintops with great views.

We recommend enjoing the island on foot, or on your bike. You can rent a bike from 'Skåtøy i farta' just a few hundred metres up the road from the ferry doc at 'Skåtøyroa'. Just follow the main road, and you can't miss it.

Transportation
The ferry and the express boat makes several daily trips back- and forth to Skåtøy. The ferry docks at Skåtøyroa, whilst the express boat and hired taxi boats can dock at either Skåtøyroa (at the end of the island) or Skåtøybrygga (in the middle of the island. Close to the church and Skåtøy café). Click here to see more information about the taxi-boats, and click here for timetables from Kragerø- Skåtøy. You can bring your car on the ferry, while the express boat will only take passengers (and bikes!).

Explore Skåtøy

Want to exlore Skåtøy? Have a look at the map of the island with places of interest. (You'll be able to pick up this map at the ferry doc, hotels, town hall etc. if you'd like a printed version.)

Skåtøy is a magnificent island to explore, either on foot or by bicycle.  From the ferry terminal at Skåtøyroa it’s seven kilometers to the old fishing village Korset, at the tip of the island. The road passes close to Skåtøy Church, also known as the Cathedral of the archipelago. The church, built in 1862, is one of Norway’s largest timbered church.

Krikken Coastal Fort lies on the outermost shore of western Skåtøy and a stop here is an exciting experience steeped in history as well as a beautiful hike through Skåtøys nature. Read more about the coastal fort from WW2 here!

Not far from the coastal fort, you will find Eidkilen bakery, where you can get freshly baked pastry by the sea. (Note that there is a barrier on the road out to Eidkilen bakery, Øytunet and Krikken, you can take your bike here but as it's a private road you need to speak to the landowners to be able to drive past the barreier).

Over the years, many artists have lived on Skåtøy for longer or shorter periods of time, including the famous artist Theodor Kittelsen who illustrated trolls, nature, the 'Pesta' character and more. Walk by Pesta's house on the trail heading towards Skåtøy Café, a charming little place in the middle of the island. A stonethrow from Skåtøy kafe, you'll find Galleri Bak Fasaden, a lovely and charming gallery with a beautiful garden perfect for relaxing. .
