About

Arøy is an island located at the edge to the open sea, with the highest point Breviksheia, 65 meters above sea level and with a size approximately 850 acres. There are a lot of forest and many trails on the island and great ocean views if one takes the ride up to Vaktheia. On top of Vaktheia stands a small Guard house. This Guard house was built to keep track of ship traffic that had to be customs cleared. Was in use from 1881. Arøy also has a famous burial mound from the Bronze Age. In 1875 there were 22 permanent residents on the island.

Potholes
"Brønnane" is on the outside of Arøy towards Jomfruland. Here lies 36 large and small potholes side by side. Potholes originate from the last ice age more than 10,000 years ago and were created by the whirlpools in glacial streams that forced stones to rotate. The small islands with polished rocks outside of the island is ideal for swimming trips.
