The island Skåtøy

Skåtøy is the largest of Kragerø’s islands with a population consisting of both vacation visitors and permanent residents. Over the years, a great many artists have lived here for longer or shorter periods of time.

The ferry makes several daily calls. From the ferry landing at Skåtøyroa it is seven easy kilometres to Korset at the tip of the island. The road passes close to Skåtøy Church, also known as the Cathedral of the Islands. The church, built in 1862, is Norway’s third largest timbered church.

At nearby Skåtøy Cafe, you will see the figure of an old, crook-backed woman. It is supposed to represent “Pesta” as featured in Theodor Kittelsen’s book about the Black Death. The figure was made by Per Elsdorf in 2001.

Skåtøy has a long tradition for festivals. In 2015 Skåtøy celebrated the 15th anniversary of The Skåtøy Folksong and Poetry Festival. In 2016 there was no festival organized. After Skåtøy Café got new owners, this tradition is now continuing with the Skåtøyfestivalen

A cruise on the fjord on a warm summer day is one of life’s more enchanting experiences. You can even meet the characteristic Eidkil Troll on your way through the Eidkil Canal.

Krikken Coastal Fort lies on the outermost shore of western Skåtøy. The fort was built by the Germans during WWII. Trenches, underground rooms and passageways have now been opened to the public. A stop here is an exciting experience steeped in history. Children will enjoy the opportunity to explore the area. Don’t forget to bring a torch with you!
