Igletjønnuten is one of the most spectacular yet demanding mountain hikes in Fyresdal. This loop trail takes you through rugged high-mountain terrain, offering a unique blend of breathtaking nature and cultural history.
Quick Trip Overview:
The hike to the summit of Igletjønnuten offers an incredible sense of space and a fantastic view of the entire Fyresdal mountain range. From the dramatic cliffs overlooking Lake Fyresvatn, you get a magnificent vista of the water and further west toward the mighty Setesdal Highlands (Setesdalsheiene). This is the ultimate viewpoint for those seeking the grand contrasts of the Norwegian landscape.
Please note that the trail to Igletjønnuten is categorized as technically difficult.
Balance and Surface: Sections of the route feature slippery and wet terrain, even in dry weather. Good balance and appropriate hiking footwear are essential.
Recommendations: This hike is not recommended during rainy weather. Due to the nature of the terrain, it is also not advisable to carry children in hiking carriers.
In Your Backpack: Ensure you pack necessary safety gear, including extra warm clothing, a first aid kit, and plenty of food and water.
Along the trail, you are literally walking through history. The area houses the remains of abandoned mountain farms from the Middle Ages that were left deserted following the Black Death in the 14th century.
At Brautestøyl, you can observe overgrown ruins of farm foundations that bear witness to ancient settlements. Many of these farms lay dormant for centuries before being rediscovered and used as summer dairy farms (setergrender) from the 1600s onwards. This adds a fascinating historical dimension for any hiker.
To preserve the fragile nature of Fyresdal and respect the local ecosystems, we encourage all visitors to practice responsible travel:
By traveling responsibly, you contribute to ensuring that future generations can enjoy the same unique experience of Igletjønnuten that we have today.
