About

Rolleivstad – An Old Mountain Farm in Fyresdal

Rolleivstad is a historic mountain farm located in Fyresdal Municipality, Telemark, Norway. The area has a long and rich history, with three Stone Age artifacts discovered near Rolleivstad Lake, along with the remains of three ancient iron extraction sites. The oldest of these dates back nearly 2,000 years.

Farm Buildings and History

There are five buildings on the farm. One of them dates back to the 1600s and is automatically protected by cultural heritage laws. The other buildings were constructed during the 1700s and 1800s. The last permanent residents left the farm in 1896, and since then, it has been used as a summer pasture farm.

The Villa – Cabin for Rent

The "Villa" is a cabin situated on a hilltop, rented out during the summer months from June to August. Built in 1910, it offers a cozy and peaceful retreat.

The cabin features two living rooms, a kitchen equipped with cooking utensils and tableware, and a hallway area with a propane fridge. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms with a total of seven beds (including one double bed). Summer duvets and pillows are provided, but guests must bring their own bed linens (duvet covers, pillowcases, and sheets).

Outbuildings and Amenities

Firewood for heating is available in the outbuilding, where you'll also find a composting toilet with a rotating drum system. Cooking is done with propane, lighting is powered by solar panels, and heating is provided by a wood-burning stove. Water must be fetched from a well located on the lower part of the farm.

Fishing and Boats

Guests have access to two rowboats located by the lake, about one kilometer from the cabin. You’ll need to bring your own clean fishing gear. Rolleivstad Lake is known for its excellent fishing. If you have experience with gillnets, you may borrow and use up to four nets freely during your stay. Fishing is included in the rental.

Getting There

To reach Rolleivstad, turn off Highway 355 at Hegglandsgrend and drive approximately 9 km to the farm. There is a toll road from Geitestadgrend, with a fee of NOK 50 (automatic toll station). You can drive all the way to the Villa via a gravel road.
