About

The Saboteur Trail (Sabotørstien) is perhaps Norway's most famous historical hiking route. This is the path used by the world-renowned Norwegian resistance fighters during WWII on the night they carried out the legendary heavy water sabotage mission against Vemork. Experience dramatic war history combined with the magnificent nature of the Rjukan-Notodden Industrial Heritage site.

Quick Facts

  • Difficulty: Moderate (includes a steep descent)
  • Distance: 8 km
  • Time: 2.5 – 4 hours
  • Terrain: Varied forest terrain and mountain trails
  • Season: May – October
  • Starting Point: Rjukan Fjellstue (approx. 11 km from Rjukan city center)

Route Description: From the Plateau to Vemork

The hike begins at Rjukan Fjellstue. From here, you follow the gravel road a short distance into the Hjerdalen valley before the trail leads you into beautiful and varied forest terrain.

  1. A Historical Journey: Along the trail, you will find information boards that provide unique insights into how the saboteurs made their way from the Hardangervidda plateau and down the steep gorges to Vemork to blow up the heavy water plant.
  2. The Landscape: The unique nature of the area makes the hike an experience in itself, featuring deep forests and spectacular views of the valley.
  3. The Descent: Please note that the trail has a steep descent toward the end as you approach Vemork. Solid footing is required for this section.

Essential Gear: Sturdy footwear (hiking boots) is a prerequisite. On rainy days, waterproof boots are highly recommended as the trail can become wet and muddy.

Guided Tours: Visit the Saboteur Cabin

To add an extra dimension to your experience, consider joining a guided tour. A professional guide will share detailed stories from the war and provide exclusive access to the authentic Saboteur’s Cabin.

Contact: Rjukan Tourist Office or Visit Rjukan.

Groups/Companies: Can book directly via phone at +47 35 08 05 50 or email: bestilling@visitrjukan.com.

Sustainability and Responsibility in a World Heritage Site

The Saboteur Trail is located in an area of immense historical and environmental value. We ask all hikers to practice "Leave No Trace" principles:

  • Stay on marked trails: This is especially important on steep sections to prevent erosion.
  • Carry out your trash: Help keep these historical sites and the nature clean.
  • Respect wildlife: You are in the border zone of the Hardangervidda plateau; please show consideration for local wildlife.
