About

Join Norway's largest stave church, Heddal stave church, the most beautiful of them all! The magnificent stave church, with the three towers as a distinctive feature, is a national cultural treasure that displays fantastic wood-building art. The church has been in the valley for many centuries, ever since the 13th century. It was created in a time of upheaval between pagan and Christian faith, it is shown in symbols and ornaments. In the stave church you step into a historical memorial and experience the meeting place of countless Heddal families, it's still in use as the main church in the village for large parts of the year.

Kafe Olea
In the red barn on the stave church yard you will find the pleasant café Olea. In addition, Prestegårdslåven has a "quiet room" where you can retreat. Here you also can buy great travel memories from the store. Free Wifi. There is seating both outside and inside, of course with a view of the fine church.

Guided tours
In the café you can buy tickets both for visits to the stave church and to the exhibitions. Guiding is included in the ticket. About 15 minutes in Norwegian or English. For German, inquiries must be made in advance. During the high season, there are regular guided tours every hour with some exceptions, such as services and weddings etc. Larger groups are recommended to agree in advance. For groups, a guided tour with a meal included can be offered.

Exhibitions
In the barn you will find the exhibition about the unknown stave church furniture, the bridal bench and the Bell Desk. Together with Bispestolen, they tell the story of Sigurd Fåvnesbane and Brynhild. The exhibition "Dragon dragons and shield maidens" conveys the spread of this story locally and internationally. There will also be skilled wood carvers working outside the stave church until mid-July. They want to build a copy of the Bell Desk and use the same type of tools as in the Middle Ages.

Outside season
Feel free to contact for guided tours even out of season. Welcome to Heddal Stave Church!
