Nissedal

Nissedal

There are up to 1750 smaller and larger waters around the mountain- and forest side of Nissedal. In Fjone for example there is a long sandy beach. And dozens of rivers and lakes invite to paddling, fishing, and all kinds of boat sports.

The Nissedal commune is about 908 km2 big and with round about 1375 inhabitants. The Nisser one of the largest lakes within Telemark is the dominating feature of the country side with sandy beaches on one side and rough, steep rocks on the other side. The 40 km long and 250 m deep lake contains pure, clear drinking water. Nissedal became its name from the lake Nisser which is coming from the old Norwegian word “Nidrsær” and means “the lower lake”. Along the Nisser there are several cave paintings, grave hills and a lot of other signs of former settlements.

The climate is quite good and the surrounding is perfect for hiking trips summer like winter. There are different kinds of industry. The most important ones are farming, forestry, breeding fur-bearing animals, power supply and tourism.

Nissedal is bordering Kviteseid in the north, Drangedal and Gjerstad in the east, Vegårshei and Åmli in the north and Fyresdal in the west. The highest peek is Førheinutane with 1.049 m.
