Porsgrunn
Porsgrunn is a town and a commune of the province of Telemark. Together with Skien and Bamble it is also a part of the region called Grenland. The Porsgrunn commune includes the former town commune of Brevik and Porsgrunn as well as the commune of Eidanger.
Porsgrunn is bordering Skien and Siljan in the north, Larvik in Vestfold in the east and Bamble in the vest. The highest peek is the Fjerdingen with 360 meter. Like Skien and Bamble Porsgrunn is also one part of the Grenland region. In The town itself there are 13.000 inhabitants living.
Porsgrunn is lying at the opening of the Telemark River and is an important industry town. The town received his name after a ground in the Porsgrunn River overgrown with “pors” (Myrica gale)
The area around Porsgrunn is also a part of the Gea Norwegica Geopark.
The most dominant industrial sector is the processing industry which has been a part of Norsk Hydro in former days. Today it is Yara and Ineos which are operating the processing machines for chemical fertiliser and polymer and are one of the biggest industrial employees in Porsgrunn. Besides Yara one of the worlds biggest producer of chemical fertiliser are also BIS Production Partner AS, Porsgrunds Porcelain manufactory, Isola AS, BEHA, Eramet, REC and Norcem located here in Porsgrunn.
