Tinn

The Tinn commune with the town of Rjukan and its dramatic nature with mountains and waters is a great experience for people of all age summer like winter.

Tinn is bordering Nore and Uvdal in the north, Rollag and Flesberg in the east, Notodden, Hjartdal and Seljord in the south and Vinje in the west. The highest pike is the Gaustatopp with 1883 m. On a clear day you can see 1/6 of Norway from the top of the mountain.

To crest the Gaustatopp you can choose between a nice hiking-tour or you can take the Gaustaban up to the top. The area around the Gaustatopp is perfect for all kind of leisure activities all year round. The Ski centre is suitable both for barn and the international ski sport and provides a great range of accommodations in different price categories.
Take Northern Europe’s first cable car the Krossoban up to the Hardangervidda at 886 m. Here you can go fishing, hiking, horse-back riding or cycling. At the Norwegian industral workers museum the story of the well known “heavy water sabotage” which took place during the 2nd world war is told. The museum is located at the Venmork power station, the world’s greatest power station in 1911.

Rjukan is lying in Vestfjorddalen between Møs lake and Tinn lake and is the administrative centre of the commune. The town is known for its industrial as well as war history and unique architecture. The establishment of Rjukan was the result of the erection of Norwegian Hydro by Sam Eyde who bought the Rjukan waterfall in 1902. The production of artificial fertiliser in Rjukan was put down in 1991 but Yara has still some employers stationed at Rjukan. Today the Tinn commune is focusing on tourism.
The Rjukan swimming pool lies in the town centre of Rjukan and is always worth a visit summer like winter.

Every year several events and festivals are hold in Rjukan. Have look at Rjukan rockefestival, Marispelet, Kjerringsveiven, Trubadurfestivalen
