To experience the Telemark Canal on board your own boat it is a scenic holiday without stress and stormy winds.

The Telemark Canal - facts

The canal has its own pace, so take your time. Calculate 3 days to Notodden and back and a week to Dalen and back. As the passengers boats has priority in the canal, private boats must count on some waiting time at the locks.

Opening hours:

17.6 - 23.6. Joint lock passage *

24.6.- 11.8. 09:00 - 18:00 o'clock

12.8. - 21.8. Joint lock passage*

In Skien and Løveid the locks can be opened for private boats before 17.6 and after 21.8

Boating sport chart

We recommend private boat owners to obtain the boating sport chart for the Canal. Can be purechased at Statens Kartverk, in bookstores in Skien and Porsgrunn and at the Skien locks.

  • Keel depth 8 feet (2.5m)
  • Height to Notodden 16.0 m (Elstrøm bridge)
  • Dalen 12.8 m (Ulefoss bridge)
