Skien
Skien is the capital of Telemark and at the same time the biggest and oldest town of the province. There are 50.000 inhabitants living in Skien whereof 30.000 reside in the town itself.
The commune is one of the tree communes belonging to the region called Grenland and is bordering Sauherad and Kongsberg in the north, Siljan in the east, Bamble and Porsgrunn in the south and Drangedal and Nome in the west.
The town is one of the oldest towns in Norway and was established around the 10th century. It was also the only middle age town that was not founded by a king. Ever since the 15th century Skien has been an important industrial site. Today there are manly companies from the information and communication as well as science sector located in Skien.
The town is also known as the birthplace of the well known poet Henrik Ibsen and the commune is spending lots of effort to administrate and promote his live and works. Another known offspring of Skien is the polar explorer Hjalmar Johansen. He is also one of the founder members of the sports club Odd with Norway’s oldest football club Odd Grenland as a part of it.
